on importation into Japan, be subjected to any higher duties than those imposed under the present Conventional

Tariff, and we beg therefore that His Excellency the Officer Administering the Government will be good enough to bring the subject to the notice of the Foreign Office at an early date, with a strong representation that, if the present Conventional Tariff cannot be ameliorated, at any rate the maintenance of the present scale of Duties should, in the interests of one of the most important industries

in this Colony, be insisted upon.
